ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - NAACP leaders are asking for an unbiased and transparent investigation into the officer-involved shooting that killed 18-year-old Kionte Spencer.

They believe the situation could have been handled differently. The shooting happened near the intersection of Electric Road and Brambleton Avenue.

When officers arrived, police say they saw Spencer carrying what we now know was a B-B gun. Officers shot him when he refused to drop it. NAACP members say deadly force should not have been used. They want the police department to release all dash cam video and they're calling for more training for officers.

At least half a dozen officers are on administrative leave.

An internal investigation is underway to make sure protocol was followed.
