UPDATE: Hiker dies after falling from Apple Orchard Falls in Buchanan

UPDATE: We now know the identity of the man who fell to his death Wednesday afternoon.

Liberty University released a statement saying student Dylan Engel died after falling at Apple Orchard Falls in Botetourt County.

"The Liberty community offers its condolences to Dylan's family and friends and will continue to lift them up in prayer through this tragedy," the statement read.

LU Shepherds, Student Leadership, and Student Counseling Services are offering support to the Liberty community during this difficult time.


A hiker who fell from Apple Orchard Falls in Buchanan has died.

Botetourt County dispatched crews around 2:10 p.m. after receiving a call of a male hiker falling from the trail. The caller estimated the man fell approximately 75 feet.

Crews from Buchanan Fire Department, Blue Ridge Fire Department, Eagle Rock Fire Department, and Botetourt County Fire and EMS responded. Upon reaching the victim, crews attempted resuscitation efforts, but were unsuccessful.

Approximately 20 responders are on scene and will remain there for the next few hours in order to transport the victim from the isolated, wooded location.
