Round Town: sweet treats and Easter egg hunts

(WSLS 10) - If you're ready to go for a swim, head to Radford for the Polar Plunge. More than 600 people are expected to take the plunge into the cold waters of the New River. Events start Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the plunge happening at 12:30. It's $50 to jump in with proceeds benefiting Special Olympics.

The Virginia Museum of Transportation hosts Sips 'n Sweets on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event offers samplings of desserts, chocolate, ice cream and more. Admission is $25 at the door. Proceeds benefit the transportation museum.

Elevation Roanoke holds an Easter egg extravaganza on Saturday. More than 8,000 eggs with prizes will be hidden and scattered. There will also be face painting, bounce houses and food. It from noon to 4 p.m. at Fishburn Park Elementary.

The City of Salem holds its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday at Longwood Park. Festivities, including a visit from the Easter Bunny, start at 1 p.m. with the egg hunt starting at 2 p.m.

Head to the Taubman Museum of Art for the kick off of the Norman Rockwell Exhibition and Opening Shindy. Shindy is an old-fashion term for a large, lively party. You will get a preview of the Rockwell Exhibit, enjoy big band music and swing dance lessons. Tickets are $49 in advance and $59 at the door. The event kicks off Saturday at 7 p.m.

Runners and walkers will take their mark for the third annual Backpack Run, held by the Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation. The 5K begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at Green Hill Park. Advanced registration is $30. Proceeds from the event support teachers and student scholarships.
