PEARISBURG (WSLS10) - Hikers looking for a new experience don't need to look any farther than Giles County.
Friday, organizations and community members celebrated the official opening of a new section of the Appalachian Trail in Pearisburg.
Organizers say the new section is easy to access and is ideal for hikers of all ages.
They hope it will encourage more people to go to Giles County to enjoy the new route.
Pearisburg Town Manager Ken Vittum said, "Pearisburg has been an Appalachian Trail Community for many years and the AT has been a part of this community for many many years. We are excited that the relocation ties the trail into the Pearis Cemetery that was also a project taken on and completed by town employees and volunteers. We are happy to welcome hikers and ATC groups to Pearisburg any time of year."
Construction on the trail took more than 15 years and thousand of volunteer hours to complete.
