ROANOKE (WSLS 10)-- Roanoke City Sheriff Master Deputy Tim McCoy passed away Sunday morning, less than a day after thousands of people came out Saturday to raise money for McCoy and his family as he battled colon cancer.

Visitation is planned for Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., as well as Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at Life Church Roanoke. At 2 p.m. on Thursday the funeral will be held.

"People came by the bus loads," said craft show organizer Jason Lane.

Most shared stories of how McCoy, who worked with the Sheriff's office for 16 years and as a D.A.R.E. Officer in the school system, touched their lives, Lane said.

WSLS 10's Dawn Jefferies spoke with McCoy last week in his hospital room where he and his wife Jeannie encouraged others to get their colonoscopies and mammograms.

McCoy was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer last May.
