Students learn tornado safety during statewide drill

ROANOKE (WSLS) -- A deadly tornado one month ago in Appomattox County is a reminder to all of us that tornadoes can happen any month of the year.

No matter where you are, it's important to have a plan. That's why schools across the commonwealth are taking part in the annual statewide tornado drill this morning.

The drill will start at 9:45 a.m. with a test tornado warning sent by the National Weather Service to weather radios. The radios will sound a tone alert and show a test message to simulate what people would hear or see during an actual tornado warning. That's when students at schools all across the states will practice their school's tornado drill plan.

Roanoke City fire safety experts it's important to have a plan at schools, but just as important to have a separate plan for emergencies at home and for adults at work.
