APPOMATTOX COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police has opened a criminal investigation into a failed factory project in Appomattox County that cost the state $1.4 million.

VSP spokesperson Corinne Geller told WSLS 10 the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Appomattox Field Office is investigating the investment project involving Lindenburg Industries LLC.

The Chinese-based company was supposed to invest $113 million in the Old Thomasville Furniture building in Appomattox County, creating 350 jobs. When Governor McAuliffe announced the economic investment back in 2014, the facility was supposed to be up and running immediately.

The factory never opened and the deal fell through when the company defaulted on its loans.

The state is attempting to get back the $1.4 million it lost, but the company missed the deadline earlier this month to repay a seven-figure grant from the state.
