Montgomery Co. school start times to change in August

CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - Montgomery County families can expect later start times and later bus pickup times beginning in August.

This comes after about 18 months of debate and proposed plans.

Right now, elementary kids go to school from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Middle school students go from 7:40 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. High school students go from 7:50 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.

Under this new plan put together by new superintendent Mark Maier, elementary students are pushed back 15 minutes from 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Middle and high school students now have the same schedule from 8:05 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.

To reach this compromise, a number of bus routes will be modified. No students will be picked up before 7 a.m. for safety reasons. They will also switch to a grab-n-go breakfast at school to save time.

Parent Dana Lacy said, "It's a compromise. It's exactly what should have happened from the beginning."

This start time debate began after a number of studies came out showing that older kids need more sleep.

The school board passed the plan unanimously.
