ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Seventeen percent of children in our area have never received dental care, according to the Child Health Investment Partnership of the Roanoke Valley.
On Thursday, some of those kids received free dental check-ups as CHIP hosted a free dental day for children enrolled in the program.
CHIP CEO Robin Haldman said the organization has provided more than 4,000 preventative treatments through dental days.
"We are trying to get children excited about going to the dentist and not to have fear about going to the dentist. We want to get them excited about brushing their teeth and helping them learn about good choices in food," said Haldman.
Children also received free toothbrushes and oral health care kits and even got the chance to meet the Tooth Fairy.
