Lynchburg Humane Society stresses heartworm testing
LYNCHBURG (WSLS10) - The Lynchburg Humane Society is stressing the importance of getting your dog tested for heartworms.
April is Heartworm Awareness Month.
With warmer weather on the way, this is the time of year workers see an increase in cases. Right now, the humane society is treating six dogs with heartworms.
Director of Technology Jill Mollohan said the earlier this is caught, the easier it is to treat.
"It can cause serious illness and death if not prevented or treated," said Mollohan. "It's obviously, easier to prevent it. What happens is it's transported by mosquitoes."
The humane society added treatment can cost up to $1,000. There are preventative medications like vaccines and pills.
