BLACKSBURG (WSLS10) - Virginia Tech students will give back to the New River Valley community this weekend.

It's part of The Big Event, an annual day of community service projects.

The student-run event started back in 2002 with less than 500 students. 15 years later, more than 9,000 will participate.

"To hear how much it's grow over the years is really exciting, we're the second largest Big Event in the nation after Texas A&M and we're trying to increase every year and get the numbers up," said Virginia Tech senior Mary D'Amico.

The Big Event kicks off Saturday.
