BLACKSBURG (WSLS10) - Thousands of Virginia Tech students gave back to the New River Valley community, on Saturday. They volunteered with The Big Event, a day of community service projects.

The student run event started back in 2002, with less than 500 students and now more 9,000 students are working on items like landscaping around people's homes.

Students said this is their way to say thank you.

"I did big event three times and we did lawn work every time I've done it last year actually I spent most of the day in the tree trimming branches off and what not so it's always kind of fun," Joseph Bruzek a senior said.
