BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - The Blacksburg Police Department is looking to fill its 31st Citizens Police Academy class next month.

The academy, offered once per year, teaches 15 civilians about different police officer duties and skills.

Participants learn about topics like forensic testing and defensive tactics and have to opportunity to work with K-9 officers and use weapons.

Although the academy is nothing new, police say in today's world, community connection may be more important than ever.

"We have people that have been through the program come back and volunteer," said Lt. Mike Albert. "In some of our worst times with some of the bad situations we deal with, they'll stop by just to drop off a note to show their support. It definitely builds a good relationship."

The academy runs from May 24 to July 26, meeting every Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Applications are available either online or by visiting the police department.
