Barbara McGrath wins 2016 Golden Apple Award

ROANOKE CO. (WSLS 10) The Roanoke County Education Foundation named its teacher of the year Wednesday night with the 2016 Golden Apple Award. Barbara McGrath, a biology and ecology teacher at William Byrd High School is this year's winner.

The Golden Apple Award receives $3,000 in cash and the use of a brand new car from First Team Auto Mall for a year.

"This car is like the cherry on the worlds biggest ice cream this is this is one of the most wonderful things that could happen to a teacher. I drive a mini-van and now I get to drive this really cool car for a year and the kids I get to show my kids there and get the science teacher, she drives a cool car for a while," said McGrath.

Other teachers honored tonight with the Red Apple Award include Jasmine Harrit of Burlington Elementary, Karen Perry-Carroll of Northside Middle School and Ann Franco at Glenvar High School.

Blaine Mills at Glenvar Elementary won the Green Apple Award for best young teacher.
