MARTISNVILLE (WSLS10) - Police in Martinsville and Danville are learning how to be less biased.

Officers from both departments attended a presentation in Martinsville today focused on how human beings are naturally biased.

The instructor talked about how to recognize some of these biases, how to overcome them, and how that can help reduce the negative view that some people of law enforcement.

One of many examples instructor Scott Cunningham used during his presentation was traffic stops.

"We can minimize the complaints," Cunningham emphasized. "We can also remember that everyone is watching those traffic stops go on. Community trust is built one contact at a time and reinforced that way with all of our officers."

Eventually, all Martinsville and Danville police will receive this training.
