Dan River student charged after loaded handgun found in car parked at school
PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The sheriff's office found a loaded weapon inside a student's vehicle at Dan River High School on Friday.
On Friday afternoon, the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office received information from the school resource officer at the school about a firearm being on the school's campus.
K-9 units from the sheriff's office were brought in to conduct a search of the lot, which discovered a loaded handgun and ammunition inside a student's vehicle. Deputies seized the handgun and took the student into custody without incident.
The juvenile student has been charged with one count of the possession of a firearm on school property, a Class 6 felony and was transported to W.W. Moore Detention Center in Danville.
At this point in the investigation, there is no evidence to suggest the handgun was ever inside the school itself and students were not subjected to that threat.
No injuries were reported as the result of the handgun being on campus.
The sheriff's office and school administrators were in constant contact during the incident.
In addition to the criminal charge, the juvenile is facing disciplinary action by the Pittsylvania County School Board.
