Motorcyclist dead after truck crash on Rt. 220 in Franklin County

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A motorcyclist is dead after a crash on Route 220 Sunday night.

Carl Edward Pence, 35, of Rocky Mount, was driving his 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle north on Route 220, just south of Route 635, when he hit a deer, according to state police. Pence was separated from his motorcycle and in the road when he was hit by a 2013 Freightliner truck.

The truck, driven by Kevin Blackburn, 37, of Thomasville, NC, continued driving north on Route 220 and was later stopped by law enforcement in the town of Boones Mill.

Pence was wearing a helmet and died at the scene, while Blackburn was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

Police charged Blackburn with felony hit and run.

The crash remains under investigation and both the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team and Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation are assisting.

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A motorcyclist is injured after crashing, then being hit by another vehicle.

Sgt. Rick Gartletts with the Virginia State Police says it happened on the north side of Route 220 near Calvary Lane. The motorcycle is believed to have crashed in the roadway and then was hit by a bobtail truck.

Route 220 northbound is closed at this time.

Virginia State Police Reconstruction and the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation have been called to assist with the investigation.

It is unknown how long the roadway will be closed, VDOT has been notified to assist with traffic.

The condition of the motorcycle driver is unknown.
