DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - Mayor Sherman Saunders has officially declared the month of May "Make Danville Shine Month."
The goal of the fourth-annual campaign is to encourage community members to spend time cleaning up their homes and neighborhoods.
The Community Development Department will hold its home improvement and lawn care expo, conduct contests, and coordinate projects with organizations and communities.
The Public Works Department will also waive several fees and restrictions regarding yard waste, household debris, tire disposal and appliance pickups again this year.
Mayor Saunders says a clean community helps promote business growth and the community as a whole.
The kickoff event for this year's campaign will be the annual "Make Danville Shine Home Expo." The event is free to the public and will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 at the Community Market on Craghead Street.
Landscaping, painting, roofing, siding, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and pest control vendors have committed to be there. The event will also include food and children's activities.
The expo will be held in conjunction with the opening of the Farmers Market.
The Police Department and Commonwealth Document Management Co. will provide free shredding services for personal documents.
Community members are also encouraged to take the "Make Danville Shine Pledge" to focus on maintenance and upkeep of their property and to help neighbors who may not be able to do so themselves due to age or disability.
The campaign motto is, "Take an hour. Take a day. Take a weekend. Take THE PLEDGE to Make Danville Shine."
In support of the cleanup campaign, the Public Works Department will allow over-sized piles of yard waste and household debris to be placed at residential curbsides for collection.
