MARTINSVILLE (WSLS10) - Some Southside church goers may feel a little safer when they head to service this weekend.

Friday, the Southwest Regional Crime Prevention Association held security training at the Galilean House of Worship in Martinsville to address church safety.

Topics discussed included things like why safety is something people should be concerned about and how church members can be more prepared for something like an active shooter.

The church's pastor, Dr. Michael Penn, says he knows church safety is a topic on a lot of peoples' minds.

"There is a major concern because we have some that are okay and some that say, 'hey, I don't want to bring my children there unless I know you have a good security system,'" Dr. Penn explained.

The Martinsville and Henry County sheriff's also spoke about the issue of bringing guns into churches.
