LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - Lynchburg came out in force for the fourth stop of the WSLS 10 Kodiak Shred-A-Thon on Monday.

Last year this time, our stop in the Hill City netted 19,000 pounds of paper. This trip, we collected 150,000.

People brought bags and boxes and even pallets of papers to Lynchburg on Monday.

"There are several pallets. I couldn't tell you how many pounds, but it's a decent amount, a fair amount of paper," said Jodes Murphy, who works at Foster Electric. "It takes up a lot of space. We need to make room for new documents."

Stuart Knight planned to be at the Shred-A-Thon, but had a bit of a set back five days ago.

"I didn't think I'd be anywhere after Friday, except the funeral home," said Knight. "I had a heart attack last Wednesday."

His wife had all the paper prepared, so all he had to do was drive to the Schewels in Lynchburg and the rest was taken care of.

Roger Lane came with a truckload.

"Those are just records, but you got to keep for so many years," said Lane. "The government says you got to keep them at least three years."

He says the free event helps small businesses, like his, save money.

"200 to $300 when it's a truckload like this. So it's actually a big help," continued Lane.

The Shred-A-Thon season wraps up next Monday, May 23, in Roanoke at the Schewels on Fern Cliff Avenue from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bring as many unwanted documents as you'd like and we'll shred them all for free.
