Inmate Death at Amherst County Courthouse under investigaion

APPOMATTOX CO. (WSLS 10) The Virginia State Police is investigating an unattended death that occurred Thursday at the Amherst County Circuit Courthouse.

A Blue Ridge Regional Jail inmate, Aaron M. Steele, 23, of Campbell County, Va., had been transported to Amherst County Circuit Court for a court hearing. As is standard procedure for the courthouse, Steele was placed in a temporary holding cell at the courthouse to await his hearing.

An Amherst County Deputy spoke to Steele at one point. A short time later, when the deputy checked again on Steele, the inmate was found deceased shortly before 9:30 a.m. His remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for autopsy and examination.

At the request of the Amherst County Sheriff, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Appomattox Field Office is investigating the unattended death. At this stage of the investigation, the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
