First boating accident reported at SML on Memorial Day weekend

MONETA (WSLS 10) – Rescue teams responded to a boating accident just after midnight on Saturday at Smith Mountain Lake.

According to the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Rescue, the accident happened in the area of Peninsula Point Dr. in Moneta. Fireboats arrived on scene after the call was made for help at 12:37 a.m.

Tom Lovegrove, President of Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Rescue says no one was injured.

According to a release from the group, statistic for 2015 show us that boating inexperience accounts for the majority of boating collisions.

Lovegrove advises boaters to get as much boating education as possible. He says it's important for boaters to know their surroundings and to always wear a life preserver and obey the law.

Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Rescue is on duty 24x7 and can be reached at 911 in an emergency.
