Congressman Hurt attends Memorial Day service in Altavista

ALTAVISTA (WSLS 10) - U.S. Congressman Robert Hurt is making sure veterans in Southwest Virginia know how much he appreciates their service.

Speaking at the American Legion Post in Altavista Monday morning, Hurt said the painting of George Washington in the Capitol rotunda reminds him that Washington gave up his military power after the Revolutionary War in order for Congress to have the power.

Hurt said to him, that means Congress's most important responsibility is to make sure the country is defended and to care for those who defend it.

"The ceremony that we have here in Altavista is so important and so well done and so respectful," said Hurt. "It really makes you leave with pride and thankfulness."

He also spoke at a memorial service in Danville on Sunday.
