SOUTH BOSTON (WSLS10) - A new museum in Southside aims to pay tribute to Halifax County first responders.

An exhibit at the South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History features memorabilia from fire departments, police departments, and the sheriff's office dating all the way back to the 18th century.

The museum has been working to collect the items since November.

Museum Curator Jennifer Bryant says organizing the history of the departments in one location will help people better understand the importance of the first responders.

"Some of the officers and some of the retired fire chiefs, they've been jumping for joy," Bryant explained. "It's been such a wonderful response."

The exhibit will be up until October 1st.
