BEDFORD (WSLS 10) - The search to recover a missing canoeist in Bedford County reached day four on Thursday.

Divers returned to the James River between Amherst and Bedford County after K-9s picked up a scent during the search Wednesday.

Crews have been looking for Grant Manukynats since the boat he and a friend were in capsized on Sunday.

Conservation police say Manukynats was not wearing a life jacket.

The river crested the night after he disappeared and has continued to go down since. The water clearing up as well is helping with the search.

"Today we brought in divers to check an area to focus in on based on K-9 units that we had out here yesterday. They been out there for at least a couple hours now and I'll be out there a couple more hours before they come in," said Sgt. Roger Nipper, with the conservation police.

Searchers said they continue to check the water because there was no indication the victim ever made it to shore.
