5 in critical condition after pick-up truck goes into Jackson River near Alleghany County

Alleghany County (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police are investigating a single vehicle crash in Alleghany County. According to the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office, a pick-up truck going north on Route 687 went off the road and into the water. Authorities said it happened about 5 miles outside of Covington along the Jackson River.

State Police say the crash happened at 7:42 pm.  There were seven people in the vehicle, several were reported to be riding in the bed of the pickup truck.  The vehicle ran off the roadway and fell approximately 30 feet into the water and overturned. Five of the people were listed as critical and were flown from the scene by med-flight helicopters to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.
