GRETNA (WSLS10) - Construction is just getting started on the new park at Gretna Middle School, but a group already wants to add to it.

Members of Residents for a Greater Gretna want to extend the park's walking trail for an additional 1.7 miles to make it 3.5 miles long.

This addition would connect the track to Centra, the industrial park, and make access to the track easier.

The group hopes to raise $50,000 by the end of 2016 to help them secure grants to pay for the project.

"People who are visiting a hotel can have access to it, people at the library can come out and walk on it. So, just distance. We have a lot of walkers in town," Lou Harris, co-chair of the project, explained.

If the group raises the money and is able to get the grants, the walking trail could be completed within the next couple of years.
