Major storm hits Covington, Lexington

COVINGTON (WSLS 10) - High winds and heavy rains blew through our area Thursday night, hitting areas like Rockbridge and Alleghany counties to the north the hardest.

A tree came crashing down on a house off of White Oak Drive in Covington, destroying the deck there.

The Nicholson family who live there say the winds blew so hard, the tree fell up-hill.

Rain also fell hard in Lexington, where the weather turned from clear skies to heavy storm in about 20 minutes.

The Nicholsons say they hid in their basement when the storm first hit.

"Came back upstairs and our first words at the top of the stairs were oh no because we saw this through our kitchen window. It broke our deck railing and then hit the guttering on the roof," said Martha Nicholson.

Another tree that came down across the street from the Nicholsons, destroying part of a garage.

All of the people there were safe.
