ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The annual Star City Motor Madness will kick off in Roanoke this year with a blast from the past.

The Williamson Road Area Business Association (WRABA) is bringing back the sock hop held in the area back in the 50s and 60s.

There will be costume and dancing contests, food and for the first time in Roanoke City Parks, alcohol will be served in the form of locally-brewed beer.

WRABA was formed more than 30 years ago to promote economic and business development along Williamson Road and to hold events to bring people to the area to showcase all it has to offer.

"People are really excited. The car enthusiasts are excited," said Wendy Jones, WRABA Executive Director. "I think this is going to be a fabulous event and yeah I think it's going to go over real well. We've got a lot of people going 'Oh I remember those and things like that so yeah, I think it's gonna be very good.'"

Attendees are invited to dress in 50s costumes or come as they are to relive the dances on the Preston Park Tennis Court.

The sock hop will take place Thursday, June 23, from 6:30 - 9 p.m.

The money raised will go toward streetscape improvements along Williamson Road. You can find ticket information here.
