Virginia Tech runners qualify for Olympic trials

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - As the countdown to Rio continues, the number of New River Valley athletes with a chance to compete is increasing.

Two Virginia Tech track and field athletes qualified for the Olympic trials in July.

Thomas Curtin will run the 5K, and Hanna Green will run the 800 meters.

To qualify, Curtin had to beat a time of 13:28. Green had to run her race in less than 2:03.

There are also more than 20 Virginia Tech swimmers and divers who qualified for the trials.

"It's awesome. It's always the end goal for people running in college," said Curtin. "It's a dream to go to the Olympic trials and hope to become an Olympian."

Track and field athletes from Russia were banned from competing for their country in Rio. The International Association of Athletics Federation made the landmark decision Friday, upholding Russia's suspension over claims of doping.
