SOUTH BOSTON (WSLS 10) - A Southside organization is trying to increase literacy by giving away thousands of free books.

Around 20,000 books of all different genres are available all this week at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston.

The books were donated by the local Dollar General distribution center.

They were all shipped to the distribution center after the stores stopped selling them, so the manager of the distribution center decided to give them back to the community.

Vicky Matthews, the Career and Academic Coordinator for the SVHEC, says, "Even though we don't have children's books available, if they see their parents, their uncles, their aunts, their grandparents reading books it's going to cause them to go get whatever little book they have and want to read also."

The books will be available from 10 to 7 Thursday and 10 to 5 on Friday.

You can take as many books as you want.
