Halifax Co. teachers building guitars to learn about STEM

SOUTH BOSTON (WSLS 10) - Some Halifax County teachers are building electric guitars from scratch to come up with new ways to incorporate STEM skills into their classes.

The week-long class is being held at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston.

At the end of each day, the teachers have to create lesson plans using their newly acquired skills.

"Biology teachers write me a biology lesson, history teachers write me a history lesson based off of the STEM skills we're learning that day," explained Sam Knapp, the class's instructor and professor at Danville Community College.

Halifax County High School teacher Brian Hall says the class is helping him come up with ways to incorporate more hands on experiences into his lesson plans.

"When you put your hands on something and you actually learn where it came from, where the mathematics came from, the history, how it's affected the social make up of even this country it will definitely engage the students more," said Hall.

The teachers will get to keep the guitars once they finish the class.

Teachers also get points towards their re-certification in their specific subjects for completing the class.
