(WSLS 10) -     Newly-elected members of Lynchburg City Council will be sworn in to office this afternoon.  Council members being sworn in at City Council Chambers are Jeff Helgeson, Turner Perrow, Mary Jane Dolan and Sterling Wilder. On Friday, Lynchburg City Council will conduct its organizational meeting where City Council will elect the Mayor (President of Council) and Vice Mayor (Vice President of Council).

Patrick Henry Community College is enrolling students in the new Logistics Technician program. This short-term program can be completed within two semesters and is designed to propel students into leadership positions at Radial (formerly known as eBay), one of Martinsville's largest employers and one of the largest logistics and distribution companies this side of the Mississippi.

The company offers guaranteed job interviews and paid internships to those students. The company has been part of Martinsville for over 16 years and is rapidly growing and ships over 35 million units for companies worldwide. As they expand, they are looking to fill positions with program graduates.

The Logistics Technician program starts August 1.

It's Fraud Awareness Night at the Salem Red Sox Game. As AARP focuses on reducing fraud against older adults in our region. AARP members and their families can stop by the pavilion any time after the gates open at 6:05 PM for free hot dogs and hamburgers while supplies last! The first pitch is at 7:05 PM and will be thrown by AARP Virginia State Director, Jim Dau.

The Pulaski County School Board meets this afternoon to talk the interm superintendent. The closed session will begin at 4:00 p.m. On the agenda is an announcement the Pulaski County School Board may conduct closed meetings within the next 15 days to interview Superintendent candidates. Thomas Brewster announced his resignation in April to take another job. Brewster served Pulaski County Public Schools for the past 10 years.

The Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department is dealing with a shortage of firefighters. WSLS10 has been following staffing shortages for several months, but historically low recruitment numbers for volunteers are leading to bigger issues. If more people don't sign on by the end of the summer, it could mean slower response times in an emergency.
