Baseball tournament comes to Christiansburg, leaders say more to come

CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - The New River Valley is hosting the Top Gun youth baseball World Series this week.

The tournament is bringing in 53 teams from Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Recreation leaders said there will be a lot more of these types of events once the town develops 60 acres it purchased two years ago.

At the Truman Wilson property off Peppers Ferry Road the town plans to build an amphitheater, dog park, playground, track and multiple fields.

The goal is not only to meet the town's field needs, but to be able to host more tournaments to boost the economy.

"To be able to keep our restaurants full, to be able to keep our hotels full, it's a wonderful item from an economic development standpoint," said Christiansburg parks and recreation director Brad Epperly.

Road preparation work at the new property is scheduled to get underway this summer.
