BLACKSBURG (WSLS SPORTS via TheVTZone.com) - Sources have confirmed that Virginia Tech is losing what was once a highly-ranked recruit.

Sophomore quarterback Dwayne Lawson has left the football team. He reportedly has already cleaned out his locker Friday morning, after meeting with coach Justin Fuente and will transfer to Hutchinson Community College (Kan.).

Lawson was a highly sought-after prospect in the 2015 recruiting class, ranked three stars by Scout and four stars by other recruiting services.

Lawson never seemed to live up to his potential. He saw time in the Hokies' game against Furman last season and was the official backup to Brenden Motley after Michael Brewer's injury. In the Furman game, Lawson ran for 51 yards and a touchdown and threw for 51 more. But he had just four more yards rushing the rest of the season.

This spring, Lawson slid down the depth chart a bit more with the arrival of junior college transfer Jérod Evans and freshman Josh Jackson. In practice Thursday, Lawson took reps with the fourth team.
