611 will not have fall excursion

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The 611 Steam Engine is preparing for its last ride of the season, a trip home to the Star City.

The 611 will leave Spencer, North Carolina on Monday at 8 a.m.

The trip is expected to take at least five hours.

Unlike last season, a fall excursion schedule was not approved by Norfolk Southern, but there will be future public events this summer and fall at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

The museum is already planning events for next year.

"We have sent Norfolk Southern a list of possible excursions for next year. Last year it took over 90 days for a response. So we aren't looking for a quick response. Our hope is they'll let us know before Christmas so people may be able to buy tickets for family and others," said Beverly Fitzpatrick, the executive director of Virginia Museum of Transportation.
