It was the first Olympic rugby sevens match ever played for both teams. Rugby had not been contested at the Olympics since 1924, when men competed in the 15-a-side version of the sport. Women had never played rugby at the Olympics.
Fiji struck first, with Luisa Tisolo scoring a try three minutes into the match, and went into halftime leading 7-0.
Fiji scored again less than 30 seconds into the second half. Alev Kelter responded by scoring the first try of the match for the U.S. to cut the deficit to 12-7.
The U.S. women will return to the pitch tonight at 5:00 p.m. ET against Colombia. Watch on CNBC or LIVE online.
