Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia hold Olympics for kids

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Local children are getting into the Olympic spirit thanks to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia.

Similar to the real Olympics, kids represented different countries on Wednesday.

They students learned about various cultures and competed for medals in soccer, basketball and track and field events. Law enforcement agents were on hand to help referee. Organizers said the event is a great way to teach students about other parts of the world and build strong relationships in the community.

"To build trust with the community with young people so we think it's a great program," said John Fishwick, U.S. Attorney Western District of Virginia. "A way, in an informal setting, for kids to get together. Today they are having their Olympics so I wanted to come out and support the program."

The children also made dishes from the various countries represented.
