NBC Olympics.com – Dmitriy Balandin won Kazakhstan's first Olympic gold ever in the 200m breaststroke on Wednesday, but the headline was American Josh Prenot's silver medal: No American man had won a medal in the 200m breaststroke since Mike Barrowman won gold in 1992 and Brendan Hansen grabbed a bronze in 2004.

Balandin clocked two minutes, 7.46 seconds to Prenot's 2:07.53.

Russia's Anton Chupkov took the bronze. Fellow American Kevin Cordes, who was fourth in the 100m breaststroke earlier in the week, clocked 2:08.34 for eighth place.

The 2012 Olympic champion, Hungary's Daniel Gyurta, surprisingly did not advance out of the preliminary heats, finishing 17th by 0.02 seconds.
