SOUTH BOSTON (WSLS10) - The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston is trying to help increase literacy by giving away thousands of books thanks to help from Dollar General.

Around 20,000 books of all different genres are available all this week at the SVHEC.

The books were donated by the local Dollar General distribution center.

They were all shipped to the distribution center when the stores stopped selling them, so the manager of the distribution center decided to give them back to the community.

"Even though we don't have children's books available, if they see their parents, their uncles, their aunts, their grandparents reading books it's going to cause them to go get whatever little book they have and want to read also," said Vicky Matthews, SVHEC's career and academic coordinator.

The books will be available from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday.

You can take as many books as you want.
