Jeff Henderson won the long jump gold medal by the smallest of margins on Saturday. He became the first U.S. man to win an Olympic long jump title since Dwight Phillips in 2004.

Henderson's best jump, 8.38m (27 feet, 6 inches), was just one centimeter better than Luvo Manyonga's mark.

Greg Rutherford, the 2012 Olympic champion, claimed the bronze medal in Rio.

U.S. long jumper Jarrion Lawson finished fourth. Lawson was the 2016 NCAA champion in the 100m, 200m and long jump for the University of Arkansas.

The women's long jump competition begins Tuesday. American Brittney Reese is the defending Olympic champion.
