Man dies in canoeing accident in Pulaski Co. at Peppers Ferry Bridge

PULASKI (WSLS 10) - 7:00 p.m. update: A man has died after a canoeing accident in the New River. According to the Pulaski County Sheriff's department, the man dive teams were searching for has been located.

Lieutenant Daniel Johnson with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office helped with the recovery. He says the man's body was found a short distance from the area he went missing near the Pepper's Ferry Bridge.

Police say a husband and wife were canoeing on the New River when the canoe tipped. The wife called 9-1-1 when her husband did not resurface.

The 9-1-1 call came in 4:18 p.m. His body was located at 6:03 p.m.

The accident is not believed to be weather related. The age and name as well as where the man is from has not been released.

Johnson tells WSLS 10 that the woman was able to make it to shore without injury. She did receive medical treatment on the scene.

Multiple agencies from across the New River Valley assisted with the recovery including Ramsey, Fairlawn Police Department, Pulaski County, New River Valley Swift Water teams as well as dive and recovery and the Pulaski County Sheriff's office.

PULASKI (WSLS 10) - The Montgomery Co. emergency services are assisting in a swift water rescue in Pulaski County.

Crews are on scene at Peppers Ferry Bridge for an active search. The 9-1-1 call came in sometime after 5:00 p.m.  Josh Tolbert with Pulaski County Emergency Services says crews are still looking for one man who has not resurfaced from the water.

Turner says the man was canoeing at the time of the incident. The person who was with the missing person called 9-1-1.

No additional information is available at this time.
