Salem High School renovation could cost more than $50 million
SALEM (WSLS 10) - Designs for renovations and the expansion of Salem High School were presented at Monday night's school board meeting.
If approved, the project would be the largest in the school system's history.
The project would cost between $50 and $60 million dollars.
Mayor Randy Foley says if they chose to move forward with the whole construction package, it would be about as expensive as every other project the City has committed to in the past decade... combined.
The City also has the option of moving forward in phases, but Foley says the high school is more than 40 years old and needs some improvements.
"They're not real sturdy walls. There's a lot of sound-bleed from room to room. Narrow corridors. No sunlight, which of course everyone's aware of for the most part. The idea back then, as I understand it, was that windows were distracting to students, so now, obviously, research has proven that sunlight is needed by anyone to function properly," said Foley.
The renovations would take two to three years to complete.
