BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - First responders came together to show students and community members how dangerous distracted driving can be.
The Virginia Tech Rescue Squad, Blacksburg Fire Department, Virginia Tech Police Department and Carilion put on a mock vehicle collision on Virginia Tech's campus on Thursday.
The simulation included trapped victims as first responders used the Jaws of Life to remove those trapped, and the med-evac helicopter simulated an emergency transport.
The mock crash was designed to educate those in attendance about both drunk driving and distracted driving.
In 2014, 3,179 people were killed in the U.S. because of distracted driving, according to the Department of Transportation.
A Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study showed that texting takes a driver's eyes off the road for an average of five seconds. This is enough time to cross a football field.
