Meredith Stutz – SAVANNAH, Ga.(WSAV 3) – A woman is being hailed as a hero after she sprung into action to save a baby in danger.

Monday evening around 5:30 p.m., Kristal Peters stopped at the Flash Food gas station in Hinesville to get gas, someplace she says she's goes routinely.

But soon her visit took an unexpected turn.

"I heard a lady screaming, ‘Help! My baby! call 911,'" she said.

Peters, a mother of three, called 911 and went to assist the mom and her baby.

"And when I got here it was a whole different scene. I thought the baby was choking. It wasn't that at all, the guy had the baby and the mom. He had the baby and the mom in a position that he wouldn't release them," she said.

The man is 23-year-old Aaron Williams. Williams held his 11-month-old son with a knife to his throat and held the child's mother in a knee lock.

"She frantically was crying, looking at me, asking for help and screaming, ‘He's going to kill my baby! Please take my baby," she said.

Peters took the baby and tried to escape from Williams who had dropped the knife and gotten into the driver's seat.

"I decided to run and get the baby safely in the store and I guess I just didn't run fast enough and that's when he plowed into us," she said.

Gas station surveillance footage shows the white car driven by Williams striking Peters, still holding the baby.

"I held the baby very tight. Poor thing he has a little abrasion on his head. My knee's scraped up and I have a broken toe. My neck really hurts this morning, I've got a knot on the back of my head, but, overall, we're all fine," she said.

Since the incident, she has been praised as a hero on social media. Peters though is quick to refute any sort of focus of her actions.

"The fact that the baby survived and we all come out of it with just scrapes and bruises. I think that should be the main focal pint.  And I did what I think anybody would do if you heard a screaming mom asking for help. You know" she said. "You just go and help."

Williams was arrested and faces aggravated assault charges.

The baby was transported to May Memorial Hospital and his condition has not been released.
