SALEM (WSLS 10) - More than 150,000 people in our region don't know where their next meal will come from.

On Thursday, elected officials joined Feeding America Southwest Virginia to raise awareness about the need in our area and help fix the problem.

September is Hunger Action Month and local delegates and council members volunteered at FASWV's facility in Salem to help kick off the month.

The Roanoke City Sheriff's Office says it sees the need everyday in the people they serve and they wanted to give back.

"We deal with so many different things in our community, but certainly hunger, fighting hunger is extremely important to me as a sheriff and I'm sure to all citizens," said Sheriff Tim Allen.

Today, elected officials kicked off a month of events to raise awareness and donations for Feeding America. Hunger Action Day is September 8th.
