MARTINSVILLE (WSLS 10) - The Martinsville Police Department is trying to reduce drug use and crime in the city by educating rental property owners.

The Rental Property Enhancement Project is designed to help property owners understand what rights they have.

This comes after property owners expressed to the department that they want to do more to remove problem tenants, especially those suspected of drug use, but they don't know how.

"A lot of times, they're confused about what their rights are when they own properties and when they rent out properties," explained Martinsville Police Department Capt. Robert Fincher. "So, we're doing this education program to assist them and then also it helps to protect tenants as well, too."

Property owners who want information can contact the police department at 276-403-5300.
