South Boston YMCA pool reopens

SOUTH BOSTON (WSLS 10) - The South Boston YMCA is now one big step closer to completing it's five-year capital improvement plan.

The pool at the Y is back open after being closed for renovation for about five weeks.

A new HVAC system and LED lights in and above the pool were installed.

The pool itself was resurfaced for the first time in about 30 years and new concrete support pillars were added to the inside of the building.

"Not only are we able to provide a clean, safe place for our families to come in, for our swim teams to be here, it's also more inviting," Kristen Zerbato, the center director at the South Boston YMCA, explained.

There are still a few minor things to be done before the project is completely finished, but now that the project is essentially complete, the Y is planning to start working on re-tiling and renovating the showers and adding an HVAC system to the locker rooms.

The goal is to have all of the renovations throughout the Y completed by 2020. But, that depends on funding.

Anyone who would like to donate to the Y to help with the renovations can contact Zerbato at the YMCA.
