Southside college students, staff begin Week of Engagement

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - College students and staff in Southside are making an extra effort to give back to the community all this week.

On Monday, Averett University football players and Averett employees helped the Danville Salvation Army sort through items in storage to prepare for Christmas donations later this year.

This is the third year Averett University, Danville Community College and Piedmont Community College have partnered for the Week of Engagement.

Last year, 580 people from the three schools volunteered for 840 hours during the week.

"I really like manual labor and what not, so this suited me and I like helping people out," said offensive lineman PJ Best.

Tight end Drew Davidson said the community helps Averett out a lot, so he's glad to give back.

"I think it says a lot about what Averett's about; about giving back to the community as well as supporting the community the way they support us," Davidson explained.

The week will wrap up with an Alzheimer's walk at Averett on Saturday.
