(WSLS 10) - Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe will travel to Danville today. She will speak at Averett University at the Governor's Summit on Enhancing Engagement. The summit coincides with the annual meeting of the Virginia Engage Network, which is made of up 18 universities, dedicated to community partnerships. Best practices relating to service year experiences will be talked about.
Virginia Western Community College continues helping students impacted by the closure of ITT Technical Institute. Today, the school holds a Career Summit Employment Fair from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. More than 50 employers will be there, looking to hire people in the engineering, nursing and accounting fields and more.
Ten members of the Virginia Tech Police Department will run a 24 hour relay today starting at noon. They will raise money for charities in the region. Each member of the team will run one mile at a time for 24 hours. Money raised through sponsorships and donations will go to the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign, a charitable donation program for state employees.
Wytheville Community College holds a golf tournament today to support student veterans. Proceeds from the tournament support the Appalachian Warrior Foundation Scholarship Fund. This is the second year for the tournament.
Sweet Briar College holds an environmental science weekend for high school girls starting today. Participants will get hands on experience by collecting samples and data from streams and forests on campus. They will use technology to answer questions about what they found.
Christian Heritage Academy in Franklin County kicks off its annual Heritage Project today. Students will help address the needs of those who go hungry in the county. Students and parents will set up at Kroger stores in Rocky Mount and Westlake, collecting non-perishable food items for local food pantries. According to Feeding America, more than 6,000 people in the county are at risk of hunger every day.
